World 4-1
Step One
This world’s purple water is toxic, and it will knock Mario dead if he so much as dips a toe in. The other new hazard is the giant Scuttlebugs that drop from the trees – jump off their backs instead of trying to slip beneath them.
Step Two
Beginners should focus on survival, but experts can try for 1-Ups by bouncing from enemy to enemy in a continuous chain. For best results, get a running start and hold down the jump button as you stomp them.
Step Three
When you run out of land, Dorrie will appear to offer you a ride through the remainder of the stage. You can reach high items and platforms by jumping from her head, but to get the Star Coin you will need to bounce off of a Scuttlebug’s back. If you ground pound Dorrie she will lower her head and speed up. But with her head low, you may not be able to reach certain items. Ground pound her again to have her return to normal.
Step Four
Leap from Dorrie’s head to the platform at point 4 and hit the Invisible Block to send a vine skyward. Climb it to a pipe that will take you directly to the level’s red flag exit.
Step Five
Stomp the two hanging spiders, then drop to the floating platforms and dash over the gaps to grab the Star Coin without risk of falling.
World 4-2
Step One
When you step on a purple mushroom platform, it will tilt dramatically to whichever side you are standing on. If you want to straighten it out, either jump repeatedly or stand in the dead centre.
Step Two
You can get this 1-Up mushroom only by ground pounding the block from above and chasing it down on the wobbly purple mushroom platform.
Step Three
Grab the first four red coins, then ride the left edge of the second purple mushroom platform to get the fifth. Before you slide off, jump right to the final three.
Step Four
Don’t ground pound the block at point 4 as you pass! Instead slide off the purple mushroom platform and jump beneath the block to reveal in invisible block. Leap from that to punch the Vine Block, then climb into the clouds. There you will find a second Vine Block that will take you to a Star Coin you can easily long-jump to.
World 4-3
Step One
Swim to the far-right side of the screen after the Mega Unagi makes its first appearance. That is the only way you will enough time to swim beneath the ledge and grab the first Star Coin without being crushed when the scrolling screen catches up with you.
Step Two
The black areas on the map conceal small snapping eels. To get the coins without being bit, always take the coin farthest from the Unagi first, then swim in to get the nearer one after the Unagi strikes and misses.
Step Three
Whenever you see normal blocks on this level, you know a Mega Unagi will be along shortly to smash them. So, if you want the 1-Up at point 3, you will need to swim at the right side of the screen and hit it as soon as it scrolls into view.
Step Four
When you see the ? switch on the ceiling, punch it quickly before the Mega Unagi appears. The switch will shut off the air from the pipes, allowing you to glide safely beneath the eel. The final pipe leads to a room where the third Star Coin is – you will need to move quickly to get into it before the bubbles return. In the room below, get the Star Coin by dropping into the red pipe’s bubbles from above.
